Hi Belinda
wow I am so excited for you to have moved!! We are sitting here looking at real estate in Launceston. Just waiting for me to finish uni in October and then want to be down there as well! How do the locals feel about you moving in? I've heard they are a bit 'put out' by the mainlanders invading? I have a 16yrs old son and it worries me about what young people down there do for work. Any way I figure its all about lifestyle. Clean air, space to move, proximity to reallt cool places to walk etc. cheers

Well after reading this website for the past six months we are finally getting ready for the big shift to Launceston. I have never been so scared about shifting before (we shifted from NZ to South Australia 5 years ago) as we don't know anyone and is a bit daunting 'starting over' again. My husband has a start date in mid July so are just finishing our renovation on our property before we can rent it, then we will try and find a decent rental in Launceston close to the hospital. We are both nurses but I'm not sure of the job situation for me - it all seems a bit gloomy in the media so am hoping it won't be so bad on arrival. I would love to catch up with new arrivals in Launceston, maybe we can start a 'coffee club' Bel! Susan from SA. : )

Hi Sarah,
Thanking you very much for this blog. Having lived in Tassie and being forced to move back to the mainland :( to find work, this blog has become a lifeline for me. My wife, younger daughter and I came on a 10 day holiday/research tour in May 2008 flying in to Hobart driving across to the Tasman Peninsula( Port Arthur and surrounds) up the East coast to Binnalong Bay across the top as far the Nut (Stanley) back down the middle through Deloraine and Lonny (Launceston) back into Hobart and decided on the Channel area, for work and accessibility to services, to live. At the time, Tassie was screaming out for tradies, as it was experiencing a surge in building and as my wife is multi-tasked in hospitality and retail, we saw it as a positive safe move. My BH and I, sold our house in the Redlands in Qld ( yes another one) we arrived in our new homeland on the 1/1/2009 to create a new life, along with our two daughters, then 21 and 25, older daughters partner, two grandchildren + our golden retriever. The first year or two saw us in solid employment, so while we rented, we purchased 3 acres in Margate to eventually build on and live. Unfortunately because of the Global Financial Crisis all that came to a sorrowful end, so we sold up our land, packed up the family and are now living in Victoria and still looking for work. My wife found living in Tas a bit cold but I Ioved it compared to Qld's heat. If your lucky enough to find the type of work that isn't too affected by an unstable economy then you couldn't live in a better place. At the moment my wife and I are studying for Aged and Community care and hopefully this will allow us to live where we want to. My heart is still in Tassie and once you've lived there and appreciated what it has to offer then you will not want to leave. Would I move back ?...in a heartbeat.

"Leap of Faith" is what my husband and I have called our shift to Launceston. We are different to most people because we moved here to have a life and not to live in the city any-more. In the last 7 years we have lived in Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane trying to save enough money to move to Launceston. We are in our 40's and dont have children, and not at retirement age, need to work and adjust to the cold while we dont have arthritis! My husband has a full-time job he secured on arrival, and I after only looking for a week, have my first interview today. We used to live next to a family with 9 screaming children on one side and 4 on the other, at last we can only hear birds! We are finally here! Hi from Bel

My husband and I moved to Tasmania from Brisbane just over a week ago. We are living in Launceston, and out of town at Swan Bay, renting to start with. I have been watching the advertised jobs on Career One, Seek and the local newspaper, but once again have found it more beneficial to walk in and hand over my CV, face to face. I have found the locals in Launceston to often say it is difficult to find work because they are cutting back staff due to business closures. I dont listen to them because I have a positive attitude, and every-one is different, with different qualifications. Has there been any groups started for meeting people and making friends via this website, of mainland movers? It would be great to have a coffee and talk about the challenges and ask questions face-to-face! The shift was massive! Bel

Hi Wendy,

Each council in Tasmania has its own reglulations regarding dog walking and there are designated on-leash and off-leash areas. If you do a search for "off leash dog walking areas Tasmania" various council websites will come up with links to their dog information section. Here is the google search link:

http://www.google.com.au/search?q=off+leash+dog+walking+areas+tasmania&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-au:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=&redir_esc=&ei=g3SYT5bsH4uiiAfbpvXfBQ

Hope this helps!

Hi Sarah,

I've been craving temperate climes, mountains, fresh air & water, ocean for a while now & want to thank you for your blog. It's great reading from authentic people. I'm a healer & nature lover. I have a beautiful 6 yo german sheperd & burmese cat.....both more human & loving than quite a few of the human race. My question is - is Tassie OK with pets? Strange question, but here in Qld there is so much legislation on walking dogs. I crave an environment like the UK where people can walk their well behaved pets off leash on beaches & nature trails. I don't want to live in a city or surburbia & I totally respect the laws in built-up areas. Do you have any feedback?

Hi,
Tasmania is absolutely delightful. No, your wife will be accepted with no problems whatever. No problems. I am not Aboriginal and am accepted as an Aussie. It's great here. Don't be afraid of a lack of cultural diversity down here. That makes us unique. We are very welcoming in Tassie.
